⚠️ Brown & Powdered Different!
See chart below for all sugar types
200g Sugar Conversion by Type
Granulated White Sugar
200g = 1 cup (exact). Most common baking sugar. Also called white sugar, refined sugar, or table sugar.
Brown Sugar (Packed)
200g brown sugar = slightly under 1 cup (220g = 1 cup packed). Brown sugar is denser due to molasses content.
Powdered Sugar (Icing Sugar)
200g powdered sugar = 1⅔ cups (120g = 1 cup). Powdered sugar is much lighter and fluffier.
Caster Sugar (Superfine)
200g caster sugar = 1 cup (same as granulated). Finer crystals but same density. Common in British recipes.
Coconut Sugar
200g coconut sugar ≈ 1 cup (similar density to white sugar). Natural sweetener, caramel-like flavor.
Quick Reference: Grams to Cups (Granulated)
Formula: Grams ÷ 200 = Cups (for granulated sugar only)
Why European Recipes Use 200g
🌍 Metric System Standard
Most of the world uses grams for baking. 200g is a convenient round number that happens to equal 1 US cup.
⚖️ More Accurate
Weighing ingredients (grams) is more precise than volume (cups). Especially important for professional baking and consistent results.
📏 No Packing Variables
200g sugar is always 200g. But "1 cup sugar" varies if loosely or tightly packed, humid or dry environment.
🎂 Recipe Scaling
Easy math: Need half the recipe? 200g ÷ 2 = 100g. With cups: "half of 1 cup" requires extra measuring.

How to Measure 200g Sugar Without a Scale
✅ Method 1: Use 1 Cup
The easiest way: 200g granulated sugar = exactly 1 standard US cup (240ml cup).
- Use dry measuring cup (not liquid measuring cup)
- Scoop sugar into cup
- Level off with knife (don't pack or tap)
- = 200g granulated sugar
Method 2: Tablespoons
200g = 16 tablespoons (if you don't have a 1-cup measure)
1 tablespoon granulated sugar = 12.5g
200g ÷ 12.5 = 16 tbsp
Method 3: Kitchen Scale (Most Accurate)
Place bowl on scale, press "tare" to zero, add sugar until it reads 200g. No conversion needed!
Sugar Measurement Tips
❌ Don't Pack Granulated Sugar
Unlike brown sugar, white granulated sugar should NEVER be packed. Scoop and level only. Packing adds 20-30g extra!
⚠️ Sifting Changes Volume
If recipe says "200g sugar, sifted," weigh AFTER sifting. Sifted sugar is fluffier, takes more volume. But by weight, 200g is 200g.
✅ Check Your Cup Size
US cup = 240ml. UK cup = 250ml (slightly bigger). This calculator uses US cups. For UK cups, 200g ≈ 0.96 UK cups.
